Qazi Onik Islam given a two-year suspension for doping violation

Bangladesh's first-class cricketer Qazi Onik Islam, who featured in the previous Under-19 World Cup, has been given a two-year suspension due to the doping offence committed by the player. In November 2018, Islam had tested positive for Methamphetamine(d-) during an in-competition test held in Cox Bazaar.

The substance is included in ICC's prohibited list of 2018. Consequently, in February 2019, the left-arm pacer had admitted guilt and also accepted the provisional suspension that was meted out as per BCB's Anti-Doping Code.

In their latest press release, the BCB stressed on their policy of zero tolerance regarding doping violations. However, given that this was Islam's first offence and considering Articles 10.10.1, 10.10.2 and 10.10.3 of the Anti-Doping code, it was decided that 8th February 2019 (the day Islam was provisionally suspended) be considered as the starting date of the suspension.

As a result, he would be eligible to resume cricketing activities after 7th February 2021. It was during the National Cricket League that Islam was tested positive while representing the Dhaka Metro. Subsequently, he was removed from the BPL draft and all other programmes that were under the BCB's reach.
