Shastri embraces 'good lesson' as India gear up for Christchurch

India's defeat in Wellington wasn't as much a blow to their confidence, as it was a lesson going forward, if head coach Ravi Shastri is to be believed. After going unbeaten in 2019, with a winning streak of seven matches under their belt, Shastri welcomed the shake-up in mindset brought about by their loss in the first Test, which he reckons will help the team to come back stronger as they look to level the series.
"We were outplayed in that first Test. But I always believe when you are on a run like we were, a shake-up like that is good because it opens your mindset," Shastri said on Friday (February 28). "When you are on the road winning all the time, or you have not tasted defeat, you can have a closed mindset, a fixed mindset.
"Here once you have seen what has happened, which is good, there are opportunities to learn. You know what strategies New Zealand are employing. Mentally now, you are prepared in what to expect and you have your plans, how you are going to counter that. It's a good lesson and I am sure the boys are up for the challenge coming up tomorrow."
One of those lessons that India tend to be getting again and again, without making much progress, is against the lower-order. That issue flared up in Wellington as well when Kyle Jamieson and Colin de Grandhomme paired up for a handy partnership, before Trent Boult went gung-ho as New Zealand recovered from 225/7 to post 348.
Shastri acknowledged the problem area and stressed on a different approach going forward. "That is a good question because it has been a problem for us in the last year or so. In spite of us doing well, there have been days when we just cleaned up the tail, on other days where there has been some resistance.
"We have had a chat on that, how to look into bowling at the tail. Either at times, are we being over-aggressive or at times are we being too defensive. We have had a chat on that and we will look to address it in a different manner. You will see it."
Shastri, like Kohli, also wanted the batsmen to shed their 'conservative' mindset, although he acknowledged the part of New Zealand's world-class attack in sustaining long periods of pressure.
"You saw what Southee and Boult could do with the experience they have and the knowledge they have in bowling in these conditions," Shastri said. "If I am not mistaken they are the third highest pace bowling pair in terms of wickets in Test match cricket which is a terrific achievement. Our guys know what to expect from an experienced bowling line-up."
While India's focus is to take pitches out of the equation when they play at home - 'to hell with the pitches' as Shastri so subtly puts - the head coach realises the importance of adapting quickly to the conditions abroad. A lot of the times, conditions are primary in dictating India's team combination, as was the case when Rishabh Pant was picked over Wriddhiman Saha. Now, after their glaring batting failures in the first Test, could that alter the dynamics of the team combination? More specifically, could Ravindra Jadeja come in place of Ravichandran Ashwin to lengthen the batting?
"He is a world-class bowler, there is absolutely no doubt about it," Shastri said of Ashwin. "But we have to make sure that we pick the right sides for the right conditions and see what a player can bring to the table. He has bowled well over the years and if anything, he will be disappointed with the way he has batted. He would want to improve on his batting in time to come."
Shastri also confirmed that Prithvi Shaw, who was under an injury cloud with an issue in his foot, is clear to play.
The second and final Test of the series starts on Friday (February 29) at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch with New Zealand 1-0 ahead.
