Former Bangladesh spinner Ramchand Goala passes away

Ramchand Goala, who is regarded as the pioneer in the art of left-arm spin in the Bangladesh, breathed his last on Friday morning at his residence in Mymensingh.
Goala, 79, a bachelor who pledged his life to cricket, suffered a stroke and was admitted to a local hospital on June 9. After feeling a little better he was released from the hospital two days ago but had to leave for eternity as he again suffered stroke.
"He left us on Friday morning in his sleep. Reason of death is stroke. We admitted him in Lab Aid hospital, Mymensingh after he suffered stroke on June 9. He was released from the hospital as his health slightly improved," Pranjal Goala, grandson of his elder brother, told Cricbuzzon Friday.
Goala played for various reputed clubs in Mymensingh and Dhaka, displaying his talented performances in cricket successfully. A left-arm spinner and left-hand batsman, Goala was a regular feature for Abahani Krira Chakra for 12 years from 1981 to 1993, before retiring from competitive cricket at the age of 53.
Goala played for national team against a visiting Hyderabad team once but did not play any game against a representative side.
He served as the coach for various local clubs and organizations including Abahoni, Mohammedan, Pandit Para, Al-Helal voluntarily while he also served as the coach of District Cricket Team, Under-14 and Under-18 teams, organized by Mymensingh District Sports Association.
"He was a pioneer in promoting left-arm spin in our country,'' said former national skipper Akram Khan, who had the privilege of playing with him for one season in Abahani.
"During his time there was no one close to him and we can surely say he played a big role in promoting left-arm spin in our country," he said.
