ICC confirms chairman Shashank Manohar won't seek third term

A day ahead of the big ICC Board meeting, cricket's apex body has confirmed that its incumbent chairman, Shashank Manohar, will not seek a third term in office.

An official release also stated that the board hasn't taken a call on the process of the elections and will discuss it when they convene on Thursday. The ICC has generally adopted a secret ballot system for these elections, but cannot do so this time around, under the current, pandemic-hit circumstances.

Manohar rose to the ICC chairmanship in 2016, when he was elected unopposed, and went on to claim a second term in 2018 in similar fashion. In the first two years in office, Manohar oversaw changes to ICC's governance structure and financial model, despite strong opposition from BCCI. When it was time for the election in 2018, Manohar's candidature was the only one put forth by the directors at ICC.

Colin Graves, who has already announced that his tenure as ECB chairman will end on August 3, is among the front-runners for the seat that Manohar will vacate.

The current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly could also be in the mix, after he received a glowing testimonial and a vociferous recommendation to the ICC top post - from the Cricket South Africa's director of cricket, and his former opposite number, Graeme Smith.

"Leadership in our sport is going to be key, and having someone at a level who understands the modern game, understands the challenges that are going to be faced, emphasises more the people who get put into key positions. I think the president of the ICC becomes a key position. It would be great to see a cricket man like Sourav Ganguly get into the role of president of the ICC," Smith had said in the backdrop of discussions between the two cricket boards on the possibility of India touring South Africa in August for three T20Is

As reported earlier by Cricbuzz, there's another suitor from the same board - CSA - vying to be ICC chairman. Chris Nenzani, the CSA president, politely cited ICC protocols and those of his own board while sidestepping Smith's recommendation.
