BCCI to focus on injury management of domestic players

Over the years, there has hardly been any injury and workload management of domestic players, with only those at the India A and India Under-19 levels being taken care of. However, things started to change last year when the Indian cricket board (BCCI) started collecting injury-related data of domestic players in order to monitor their workloads. The fast bowlers will be the biggest beneficiary of this initiative by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The NCA recently conducted a web conference of all physios across the country, in which they discussed match data collected by physiotherapists for the last Ranji Trophy season. There was a detailed discussion on the new 'Return to Play' (RTP) procedures.

"The main motto of this initiative is injury surveillance. Players will have more faith and confidence in our domestic physios. It's a process which will surely give us result in future," a senior state-team physiotherapist who attended the webinar told TOI.

The data will help state team managements to decide how many matches a fast bowler can play while performing at optimum level.

"There is so much of cricket at domestic level. Besides Ranji Trophy, there are one-day and T20 tournaments, apart from the IPL. So the workload needs to be managed properly. For example, if a fast bowler had to bowl a lot in a previous match, he can bowl less in the nets prior to next match," another physio said.

"The states will also have to think about having proper bench strength in the fast-bowling department to preserve talented pacers. If it is mismanaged, we might lose a good talent. By the time a fast bowler reaches the highest level, he should have optimum fitness levels. The data will also help in judging injury patterns," he said.

It all started last year when physios of every state association, in each category: Under-16 to senior, were asked to upload various data pertaining to players. "The data will be useful for RTP testing. It will help in determining when a player should be back in action after injury. Physios follow different methods regarding this, because of which the chances of injury recurrence increase," he said.

Till now, injury-related research in cricket was mostly from Australia and England. "It's because NCA didn't have data of their players. However, body type, endurance and genes of foreign players are different. Suppose in the case of a lower limb injury, if an Australian player hops at a certain level, he is declared fit to play. But that level may vary for Indians. The Indian players might not have to achieve that level and play without recurrence," he said.

The data was collected for both fit and injured players. Now, the NCA has baseline data on the players. "With baseline data, NCA will have common mechanisms and certain standards which will decide when a player returns to action. It will bring in uniformity. NCA decided to have a 'gold standard' method, which has some specified criteria where players need to achieve certain levels. He needs to pass a certain test," he said.

There were suggestions about tele-medicine, especially during the lockdown. "If a physio is finding it difficult to assess or diagnose any player, he can take guidance of NPA through teleconferencing by taking an appointment," said the physio.
