Misbah calls for World Test Championship duration to be extended

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan head coach and chief selector, has called for an extension in duration of the inaugural World Test Championship following the COVID-19 pandemic that has brought all cricketing activities to an indefinite halt. The Test Championship commenced last year with the final slated to be held at Lord's next year and matches scheduled during this period are likely to get affected.
Pakistan themselves have postponed their second Test against Bangladesh and their next schedule is in England in July. "The tournament should be extended that is my view," Misbah told the media via a video conference "That is the only way we can find and end the event in a balanced way. Matches can be rescheduled if the event is extended."
The 45-year-old's major contention is that all teams must get an equal shot at making it to the Test Championship final. "I just think that all teams must get equal opportunities in the championship even if matches are rescheduled," he said. "Whenever cricket resumes all teams should get equal opportunity in the ICC World Test Championship to try to play in the final. The tournament can be extended beyond 2021."
For now, Misbah has asked all the players to ensure they are physically fit and analyse the English players keeping in mind the series in July. "I have been in touch with most of the players including centrally contracted players," he pointed out. "Even trainer is in touch with them we are giving them and sending them plans according to their equipment at home to remain in shape as a team. I want the physical condition of players to be what is required in Test cricket whenever cricket resumes."
The former captain also stated that he didn't agree with comments made by allrounder Mohammed Hafeez on PCB allowing tainted players back into the national fold. Hafeez, who had already raised objections a few years ago to Mohammad Amir's return, was recently unhappy with Sharjeel Khan's comeback following his two and a half year ban. "It is good that the PCB CEO Wasim Khan has had a long talk with Hafeez on this issue and Hafeez has shared his ideas as well," he said. "I think he will now understand that it is totally up to the organisation to take a decision on these issues.
"It is my personal opinion that if you are playing as a player you shouldn't be giving such opinion as the ICC and PCB are the authority on these matters and they take decisions as per existing law."
