Difficult for Dhoni to make a comeback if IPL is postponed - Gambhir

Should the IPL not happen this year, it will be very difficult for the national selectors to consider MS Dhoni for the T20 World Cup, said Gautam Gambhir. The former India opener also felt that KL Rahul's utility as a batsman and a wicketkeeper has made him the apt replacement for Dhoni.
The IPL would have served as a great platform for the former India captain to make a case for himself but due to the coronavirus outbreak, the tournament - which was slated to start on March 29 - was postponed.
Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Connected, Gambhir said: "On what basis can he (Dhoni) be selected since he is not been playing for the last one or one and a half year. If the IPL does not happen this year, then it will become very difficult for MS Dhoni to make a comeback. Ultimately, you are representing India, so whoever dishes out the best performance and can win the match for India should play for the team. As far as his retirement plans go by, that's his personal choice."
MS Dhoni last played in India colours during the 2019 World Cup and has since then been on a prolonged sabbatical. There were speculations though a good IPL might help MS Dhoni in getting a spot for the T20 World Cup, slated to happen towards the end of the year.
Gambhir threw his weight behind KL Rahul, who he thinks is a multidimensional player. "The apt replacement for Dhoni could be KL Rahul. Ever since he has donned the keeper's gloves in white-ball cricket, I've seen his performance, both batting and keeping. Obviously his keeping is not as good as Dhoni's, but if you are looking at T20 cricket, Rahul's a utility player, can keep and bat at No. 3 or 4."
Another former teammate of MS Dhoni - VVS Laxman - felt that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman still has a couple of IPL seasons left in him. "The new selection committee will have to sit down with MS Dhoni and understand his future, as far as Indian cricket is concerned. But MS Dhoni will continue to play for CSK and do well for CSK. Not only this IPL, he (Dhoni) will probably play in the next couple of IPLs, and then we will take a call about his future as a cricketer," said Laxman.
