Mashrafe Mortaza has confirmed that he will step down as Bangladesh's ODI captain at the end of the ongoing series against Zimbabwe. The 36-year-old, who fronted the media on the eve of the third ODI against Zimbabwe, affirmed a decision taken by BCB chief Nazmul Hasan ahead of the series to relive the long-standing skipper of his leadership role with an eye on building a team for the 2023 World Cup.
"I am quitting from captaincy after tomorrow's match," Mortaza said. ''I am thankful to Bangladesh Cricket Board for keeping trust in me and players who played under me during this timeframe. I am sure it was not an easy journey.
"I am thankful to everyone for backing me. If I am picked as a player, I will try to share all my experience with the next skipper and I am looking forward to it. I wish the next captain all the best," he added.
As per BCB's chief, Nazmul Hasan, Mortaza's selection for future game would be based on his beep test results. Mortaza, on his part, insisted that BCB should stick to their decision of backing a captain until the 2023 World Cup.
'I think BCB should stick with their decision and back the captain until the next World Cup. We definitely have senior players (and) they are obviously capable. Right now, the senior players we have... all of them are capable to lead the team. So, now we have to see whom the BCB will choose."
Mortaza also observed that the current lot of players come under severe scrutiny and pressure. ''Cricket is not the same as before. People are watching, media is watching, cameras are watching.
"With this much pressure, he will have to lead the team. I think they should settle this decision [of picking their next captain] by thinking a lot. Because those who have played for 12 or 14 years know how to handle you [media] guys and the pressure from the outside. So, it depends on what they think about it. But it's completely my personal opinion and the board will decide on it," he noted.
Mortaza, who made his senior team debut in 2001, was first named ODI captain in 2010. After a few short stints, he reclaimed the leadership role in November 2014, leading the side to their first-ever knockouts appearance at World Cup, 2015.
Under Mortaza, Bangladesh fortified their status as a rising force of ODI cricket by making a run to the semifinals of the 2017 Champions Trophy. In all Mortaza has led the side 87 in games, winning 49 and losing 36 - a record unparalleled in Bangladesh cricket.
